What image tools do
Every picture you handle is really two things: the pixels, and the number of bytes they are stored in. Image tools change one without ruining the other — making a file small enough for a form to accept, keeping a photograph detailed enough to print, or turning one format into another so something will open it.
The tools here do that work inside the page you are looking at. Your file is decoded by your own browser, processed there, and handed straight back to you. It is never uploaded, so there is no queue, no quota, and no reason to ask you to sign up.
The formats you will meet
JPG
The default for photographs. Small files, no transparency, and it loses a little detail every time it is saved.
PNG
Lossless, supports transparency, and the right choice for logos, signatures, screenshots and line art. Photographs in PNG are huge.
WebP
Twenty to thirty per cent smaller than JPG at the same visible quality, with transparency available. Supported by every current browser.
Phones also produce HEIC files, which browsers decode but rarely accept as input — those are best converted once to JPG or WebP before you upload them anywhere.

Compress images
Hit a file-size limit exactly — 20 KB for a form, 1 MB for a print service, anything in between. JPG, PNG and WebP, one image or a hundred at once.
